Wuxing names wood, fire, earth, metal and water in a historical model of change.
What the source establishes#
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy discusses generating and overcoming relationships among the five phases. It places these schemes within the history of Chinese metaphysics and correlative cosmology. This is a historical philosophical classification, not the periodic table of chemical elements or evidence that a birth year determines someone’s character.
A reading exercise#
When reading a chart, record its author and intended use. Separate a description of a traditional model from a claim that the model predicts an individual outcome. Ask what observation could support the particular claim rather than accepting a personality description because it seems familiar.
Scope and reference#
The exercise is editorial guidance, not an interview, personal field report or claim of scientific validation.
