CC-CEDICT identifies a sense of 八字, bā zì, as birthdate characters used in fortune-telling.

Evidence and its limits#

This documents the expression, not the accuracy of a reading or the existence of an unchanging personality inferred from a birth chart. Calling the practice a form of self-reflection does not itself establish a tested psychological benefit.

Questions for critical reading#

For a cultural explanation, identify the practitioner, source and school of interpretation. For a claim about an individual outcome, ask what evidence supports that particular prediction. A calendar-based classification should not be presented as a scientific assessment of someone’s abilities, relationships or future. Separate a personal reflection exercise from a statement that a chart is true.

Scope and reference#

These questions are editorial guidance. This guide is not an interview, personal visit report, medical assessment or validation of a predictive system.
