Peking opera combines vocal performance, spoken passages, acting and martial movement.

What to watch and listen for#

The UNESCO description distinguishes string and wind accompaniment, including jinghu and dizi, from percussion such as bangu and daluo. Movement, costume and facial design help communicate a character and the action.

Heritage record#

Peking opera entered UNESCO’s Representative List in 2010. This is an inscription date, not the date the art form began.

Before booking a performance#

Check the actual production’s story, running time and subtitle arrangements. Do not assume that a short visitor demonstration and a complete opera provide the same experience.
