Black tea is called 红茶 in Mandarin.

hóng chá

Avoid a translation mix-up#

The Chinese words literally contain 红, red. The English category name is black tea. By contrast, 黑茶 is commonly rendered dark tea. Do not choose a product from the English word black alone when checking a Chinese menu.

Questions for a tasting#

Ask for the product name, origin, preparation method and serving size. If you compare two teas, keep your tasting notes about those particular samples rather than claiming that one flavour applies to the entire category.
