Shaxi’s historic market area underwent a multi-phase rehabilitation project supported by World Monuments Fund.

What the reference establishes#

The conservation organization records restoration of the theatre stage and museum from November 2003 to October 2004, followed by work in the neighbouring temple district. It describes improvements to the wider settlement as well as historic buildings. Conservation evidence contradicts the premise that the market looks exactly as it did a thousand years ago.

Questions for reading or visiting#

Separate the historic square from the place where a present-day market is held. Confirm a market’s day and location locally before arranging transport. For a building, distinguish original fabric, restoration and current use. A conservation award or inclusion on a watch list is not the same as inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
