China’s Ministry of Education and State Language Commission launched the language-resources protection programme in 2015.
Documented context#
The launch notice describes collecting and organizing recordings of Chinese varieties, minority languages and oral cultural material into multimedia resources. A documentation project is evidence of recording and preservation work. It does not by itself prove an extinction forecast or establish the present number of speakers for an unnamed language.
Questions for responsible reading#
For an endangerment claim, identify the language or variety, community, survey date and method. Distinguish fluent speakers from people who recognize a few words. A recording preserves a documented performance; it does not replace everyday transmission. Obtain informed permission before collecting or publishing a person’s speech.
