A straight-faced sentence can be a joke. Read its context before treating it as a claim about everyday life.
Start with 废话#
CC-CEDICT gives 废话 (fèihuà) meanings including nonsense and superfluous words. That vocabulary entry does not establish the history, originator or popularity of an internet genre called 废话文学.
Two invented examples for language practice#
The following lines were written for this guide. They are not quotations from real posts or evidence of a viral trend.
- 如果明天不是今天,那明天就是另一天。If tomorrow is not today, then tomorrow is another day.
- 我打开了书,所以这本书现在是打开的。I opened the book, so the book is now open.
Both repeat information instead of adding a useful conclusion. A reader may interpret the unnecessary certainty as humour. This is an editorial reading of these examples, not a finding about how all Chinese speakers joke.
Check what a screenshot leaves out#
Look for the full thread, date and speaker. Separate an invented premise from a real local practice. A caption claiming that people ride pandas to school is not transport evidence. Do not turn a regional stereotype into an explanation of a community.
