UNESCO describes the Turpan basin’s karez channels in its account of the Chang’an–Tianshan Silk Roads corridor.
Documented place and context#
Its account links underground channels supplying Qocho with deep wells within Yar. These were different elements of water management. The World Heritage property is a serial network of selected components across three countries; the description does not make every modern karez attraction or the whole of Turpan a listed property.
Planning your visit#
Distinguish an archaeological city site, a water-system interpretation venue and a modern visitor attraction. For a heritage claim, check the component name and mapped boundary rather than relying on a general Silk Road label. Confirm current access with the site operator. A historical discussion of water supply does not establish drinking-water availability or permission to enter underground channels.
Scope#
This focused introduction is not a full city itinerary or a personal visit report. Planning questions are editorial suggestions. Current prices, transport, entry requirements and operating arrangements require confirmation with the institution or provider.
