Su Shi’s Jiangshang letter provides a specific object through which to study the writer and calligrapher.
Reference context#
The National Palace Museum dates the letter to 27 May 1101 and identifies its recipient as Du Chuan. This is evidence about that letter, not permission to invent private conversations around it.
Reading exercise#
Record the catalogue title, recipient and date before interpreting the handwriting. Keep the letter’s words separate from a modern biographical narrative. A later reproduction and the original object also require separate identification.
Scope#
The reading questions are editorial suggestions. This introduction does not reproduce literary passages or claim a complete biography.
