The Summer Palace is an imperial garden in Beijing. Its heritage is the relationship between landscape and buildings, rather than one isolated palace hall.

How did it develop?#

UNESCO's synthesis describes the Garden of Clear Ripples conceived under the Qianlong emperor between 1750 and 1764. The garden was later destroyed and reconstructed, and its later history includes use by Empress Dowager Cixi. A single foundation year does not describe every surviving structure.

Which landscape features matter?#

Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill form the framework of the garden. Halls, pavilions, temples, corridors and bridges connect administrative, residential, religious and recreational functions within that setting.

How can a visitor read the layout?#

Compare buildings with different functions rather than assuming that every hall was a residence. The official heritage record is a historical source, not a current ticket catalogue or admission schedule.
