A British Museum envelope from 2005 uses a red ground with New Year greetings and auspicious imagery.
The object#
The museum records a paper money envelope with children playing a drum and gong, festive decoration and the character 福. Its acquisition note says it was given to a grandchild at Chinese New Year in London in 2005.
Interpreting the design#
The museum connects the inscriptions with New Year wishes and good fortune. This documents the object’s design and use; it does not show that every person worships red or shares one belief about the colour.
A viewing exercise#
Identify the writing, the figures and the occasion together. Keep the museum’s account distinct from any personal interpretation you add.
