Hongcun and Xidi form the UNESCO property Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui.
What the heritage record establishes#
UNESCO places both villages in Yi County, Huangshan City, Anhui. Hongcun’s water system includes the central Moon Pond and a pond to the south. The inscription concerns the villages and their architecture; it is not an inscription of every settlement advertised as a Huizhou ancient village.
Planning your visit#
Build a walk around the relationship between lanes, houses and water rather than a checklist of photo spots. Mark the entrance and your return meeting point before exploring. Ask which houses allow visitors inside and whether a separate ticket or guide is involved. A house still used privately is not automatically open to tourists.
