In discussions of Chinese thought, the English phrase golden mean can refer to 中庸, zhongyong.
A bounded introduction#
The related classical text, the Zhongyong, discusses ethical life and relationships. A translated label alone does not identify a whole argument or establish a rule to average every pair of choices.
A way to read critically#
Ask which Chinese term, chapter and translator are intended. Compare the actual passage with a paraphrase before using the English label in a cross-cultural discussion. For a textual starting point, see the linked Doctrine of the Mean introduction.
