Zhongyong, commonly called the Doctrine of the Mean, is a Confucian text associated with the Book of Rites.

A bounded introduction#

The SEP discussion uses Zhongyong 13 to examine sympathetic understanding within relationships. This is a specific textual setting, not a survey of contemporary attitudes.

A way to read critically#

Start with a named chapter and translation. Ask what relationship the passage addresses and how it reasons from one person’s expectations to another’s responsibilities. Avoid replacing the text with an anonymous quotation about always choosing the middle.
