Choose clothing by the venue, occasion and stated requirements, rather than a rule attributed to every Chinese person.
Before an event#
Ask the organizer whether there is a dress requirement and whether the event involves outdoor walking, a ceremony or a professional setting. Check the forecast for your destination.
If the setting is unfamiliar#
Describe the outfit you plan to wear and ask your host if it fits the occasion. A museum label about historical dress or colour symbolism is not evidence for a current rule at every workplace, restaurant or family gathering.
