Longquan celadon is a ceramic tradition associated with Longquan in Zhejiang.

Clay, glaze and firing#

The UNESCO account describes glaze preparation, application and controlled stages of firing and cooling. Knowledge is transmitted through teachers and families. This is a particular ceramic tradition, not a recipe shared by all Chinese pottery.

Heritage record#

The traditional firing technology of Longquan celadon entered the Representative List in 2009. Recognition concerns the living craft; it does not authenticate every object sold under the name.

A viewing exercise#

Read the object label for its date, workshop, material and provenance. Compare glaze colour and surface with the museum or maker’s description. Do not infer age, value or food-contact suitability from colour alone.
