Oxford’s teaching reference describes Cai Lun as adopting, improving and promoting an earlier technology. It distinguishes that contribution from the invention of the very first paper.
Evaluating an account#
When reading a claim about an early sheet, record its archaeological context, material and dating method. Separate an excavated object, a historical report and a later illustration. An illustration produced centuries later is not a photograph of an ancient workshop.
