The Met dates the Ming dynasty to 1368–1644 CE.

Chronological context#

The chronology provides a broad period for studying Ming art. A dynasty date alone does not establish the maker, reign, kiln, workshop or authenticity of a particular object.

A reading exercise#

Read the object’s own catalogue entry and distinguish a secure attribution from terms such as “possibly” or “in the style of.” Keep later restoration separate from original production.

Using the dates#

The exercise is editorial guidance for evaluating evidence. Retain the named reference and its dating convention when comparing another account; this short introduction is not an exhaustive political history.
