Gulangyu, listed by UNESCO as Kulangsu, is an island facing Xiamen.

What the heritage record establishes#

UNESCO records Xiamen’s opening as a commercial port in 1843 and the establishment of the island as an international settlement in 1903. Its heritage account describes architectural exchange, including Amoy Deco. These dates describe different developments; neither should be presented as the island’s founding date.

Planning your visit#

Plan the island crossing and the buildings you want to enter as separate decisions. Match the departure terminal, arrival pier and return journey on the actual booking. For an architecture walk, compare a building’s documented use and style instead of inferring a nationality from its facade. A heritage listing does not guarantee interior access.

Before making a booking#

Check current opening arrangements and admission conditions with the named site operator. The planning advice above is editorial guidance, not a report of a completed visit. No current fare, restaurant certification or guaranteed journey time is asserted.
